Kitchen Island Considerations Last Updated: Friday, December 11 2009

Tim Carter of  Ask the Builder.com fame tackles this question from a reader regarding building a kitchen island.  Some of the rules he lists for spacing are not set in stone but I think from my own personal experience make a lot of sense.  When designing or buidling a kitchen island, traffic and work space should be the first consideration that are made.  Secondly, consideration for work flow should be made.  Having to always walk around the island can become to get to the sink for example is more of a hindrance to work flow than a help.  Plan carefully.  Will there be enough room to open drawers. ovens and dishwashers.  Will there be a counter for seating?  And if so, what will those sitting at the island be viewing.  These are just a few of the considerations that should be made.  Go here for the full artcile: kitchen island
