Synopsis: More on Glazing

I wrote the previous post on a DIY Network article on how to apply a glazed finish. I thought I would add a few tips and methods not covered in the article. This is applicable to applying a glazing compound over a stained finish.
  • Glazing compound can be purchased from professional finishing suppliers (eg. Sherwin Williams Professional Division)
  • After you have stained and clear coated the first or second coat is the time to apply the glazing compound.
  • Glazing compound can be applied and wiped off with a rag and thinned with mineral spirits. So if the compound sets before you want or is darker than you would like simply wipe down your piece with a little mineral spirits.
  • Allow the glazing compound to "flash" before you apply the last clear coats. This when the glazing appears dry on the surface.
If you need further help on finishes there are a number of books that describe various finishes step by step. A good read for glazing and other finishing techniques is "Great Wood Finishes" by Jeff Jewitt.
