This is another attempt at designing a
lighthouse newel. This design incorporates a octagonal base as many of our nations (real) lighthouses do. It is not as large as the lighthouse in the previous entry. It measures 5 1/2 inches at its widest. I rendered this one as painted but it could be stained as well (I think painted is preferable on this design).
One of the challenges with a lighthouse newel is figuring how to attach the handrail. In this case, the handrail has to be "coped" into the tapered cylinder of the design. You could add a flat area (as in most post-to-post newels) but that would detract from the overall effect, I think.
