This is a larger version of a pedestal newel that I designed previously. This newel is 8 inches square at the base plus the base molding. The turned portion is 8 inches at the widest X 20 inches high. The overall height is 44 inches to the bottom of the newel cap. I thought it would be interesting to paint the base and column different colors and stain the newel cap to match (obviously not shown) the stained handrail. You're probably wondering why I painted the base green. I have a thing for green - can't seem to shake it. Alternatively, the column could be stained to match the handrail and the base painted white (look below). Oh yeah, I added recessed panels to the base.



For good measure I painted the one below with a charcoal base (could be black) and white column.
