This box newel sort of gets my creative juices going. The builder has taken a square stock box newel and simply added a hand carved "drop" applique. And though this newel is quite nice (for a period style home) withthe drop carving, there are quite a large variety of hand carvings that are available to embellish a simple box newel.  Image from iain
