I don't ordinarily make square newels because I am, in fact, in the "turning" business. I did, however, agree to make these for a customer who had to have square. They are akin to
box newels because they are "boxy". But unlike box newels they are solid oak and not hollow (which to my understanding all box newels are hollow). And as such, the transition from the larger bottom to the smaller top is a simple chamfer instead of a molding. The funny finial on top is what they wanted - different to say the least
