Most stair balconies measure 36 inches high to the top of the balcony rail (the code requires 36 inches as a minimum). But 36 inches leaves very little room to display your fine balcony newel. My graphic illustrates one way to use a taller newel and still have a 36 inch rail height on the balcony. Use goosnecks to rise to the newel and drop down to the lower rail height.
