Installing Box Newels
I wanted to put this little graphic together because I occasionally get questions from my customers for suggestions on installing box newels. Box newels are a little different than other newels because they are hollow. As such they are best secured to the stair system using a block of wood the same width as the hollow of the box newel.
This block is secured to the riser framing with blots or lag screws. You should trim the tread so that the newel slides into the nosing flush with the riser. The hollow box newel will then slide over the block for fastening. I would use construction adhesive and then nail or screw the newel to the installation block. You’ll then have to putty the nail or screw holes for finishing.
The images below should be self explanatory. As always write or call if you have a question.
