Synopsis: Newel Caps

Newel Caps

There are commonly two ways for the newels to receive a handrail: "post-to-post" and "over-the-post". The first and possibly the most common is the "post-to-post" newel (see A above). In this "post to post" design, the newel has a square to receive the rail. Typically above the square is a round top like a cannonball or perhaps a "mushroom" top as the drawing above. An example of this newel is the N102

Our second newel: B, an over-the-post newel, has a cap to match the profile of the handrail. In this example, a pie shaped section is cut from the cap and the opposing cut is made on the handrail or handrail fitting. Go here for an article on how this works. If I am not supplying the handrail I ask my customers to supply a small cross section of their handrail so that I can make a cap that will match the profile of the rail. The N106 is an example of this type of newel.

And finally, the "pin top" style ("C") is an over-the-post style as well as "B". However, in this case your handrail supplier will have a handrail fitting that will match your particular handrail. This is easier to install but definitely not as "grand" in appearance. The fitting will attach to the top of the newel. An example of this newel is the N103.
