Newel Pictures
Newels are one of the turnings we are most often requested to make. The challenge for most home owners and builders is that your local lumber yard and home center is very unlikely to have a newel larger in width than 3 to 3 1/2" inches. More than likely, that newel will be made of red oak. Ands so, not only are home owners restricted to small newels but to only one wood species. If you're really after something with a little more mass or if you're simply after the "wow" factor you will start to look around for someone that can create something unique and tasteful.
Stairways are often the architectural element that is seen when you walk throught the front door. They are, more often than not, crafted to be a showcase. So if you're trying to make a good first impression with your stairway, a larger newel is a good choice.
